The largest hospital in the north east has been hit by an outbreak of a highly contagious bacterium which has led to some services being suspended.
The HSE has confirmed that there is an outbreak of C Dif (Clostridium Difficile) in Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda.
As a result, Infection Control Procedures have been implemented which means all elective admissions, including elective tests and examinations, have been suspended.
In addition the hospital has gone on what's termed 'protective call' where only certain admissions can be made to the Emergency Department.
Most ambulance and GP referrals are being sent to other hospitals around the region.
A number of hospital beds have been closed as a result of the outbreak and members of the public are being asked not to visit the hospital.
If a visit is unavoidable, people are asked to phone ahead to make arrangements with the hospital staff.
It is likely these measures will be in place for several days. Read Full RTE Article. |

My name is Michelle Myles and I would like to say a few words to you about how I feel about the changes being made to the Louth Hospital. Back in May 2000 after suffering for 4 years with ulcerative colitis, at the age of 17 my large colon perforated. The closure of the Louth Hospital is a subject very close to my heart. My colon perforated in 2 places, which then brought on peritonitis! I was rushed to the Louth casualty dept (who were prepped and ready for me). I have been told by numerous experts (who looked after a medical negligence case that was successful against Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital back in 2007, the hospital was found 65% guilty of negligence & Dr Long was found 35% guilty) that you have a certain time limit, the Golden Hour, as the surgeons call it, after any organ perforates to be saved, as peritonitis sets in & when it does you're chances are extremely slim. I lived in Tallanstown at the time & if The Louth wasn't there & I had been taken to Drogheda I would not be here as it was too far away. I spent 14 weeks in ICU in Louth fighting for my life. The staff in that hospital were like family to me & did such an excellent job. They saved my life. I then had to be transferred to Beaumont & spent another 4 months still fighting for my life. The reason I am contacting you is because I feel someone has to do something about this. I live in Dundalk now and if I am unwell I always go to The Louth. It is nearly 2010! How can the HSE justify the decisions and the big mess our hospitals seem to be in? Our healthcare should be getting better, not worse? Of course, after my experience of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital you can imagine that I really have too many bad childhood memories there.
I listened to Majella Watters interview and admire her for speaking out and 100% support this cause! Our lives depend on it! Kind Regards Michelle Myles

The proposed cuts to Louth County Hospital Servcies are: 1. Closure of A&E for 12 hours a day - This means all patients will have to travel past the closed gates of our hospital to go to Drogheda. 2. The 12 hour A&E to become a minor injuries clinic - Similar to that in Monaghan Town which is seriously limited in the injuries / illnesses it can treat. 3. Removal of Acute Medical Services - This is the service that cares for patients with chest pain, heart conditions, respiratory conditions. 4. Changing from 120 beds to 33 "respite" beds - in effect a glorified nursing home. 5. With the removal of all these services - Intensive Care Unit will close. |
