Feet on the Street for Louth County Hospital - Forum Setup PDF Print E-mail
Written by Louthhospital.com Webmaster

At a meeting in Dundalk last night, convened by the Save Our Hospital Committee, with Dundalk Town Councillors a Forum was set up to step up the campaign for the retention of services at Louth County Hospital in Dundalk.

It was agreed that a Torchlight March will be held on Thursday 12th November to the Market Square.  For maximum affect the March will assemble at 5 key points around the town arriving at The Square at 7.30pm.  The assembly points are:

  1. St Alphonsus Road
  2. Ard Easmuinn Road
  3. Fair Green
  4. The Marshes
  5. Old Shopping Centre area

The protest march will be followed by a short meeting at the Town Square.  The speakers will include the Chair of Dundalk Council, Martin Bellew.  More details will be issued regularly over the next two weeks through media and the website www.louthhospital.com.

The theme of the March will be “Feet on the Street” and it is vital that the people of Dundalk and surrounding areas turn out in massive numbers in opposition to the plans to close 24 Accident & Emergency, Male & Female Medical Wards and the Intensive Care Unit at the Louth.

Posters and leaflets will be available for homes and businesses to display in support of hospital services.  These will be available to download on the website or from committee members or town councillors.

Save Our Hospital Committee spokesperson Anita McCann said following the meeting with town councillors :-

“We had a very productive meeting between the committee and the town councillors when it was agreed that we would all work together through the forum for the retention of services at the Louth.  The clock is ticking and there is a lot of work to be done over the coming weeks. We are asking as many people as possible to come on board for the sake of the hospital.  We are calling on all organisations, sports clubs, trade unions, community groups etc to organise themselves for the Torchlight March on November 12th.   Please contact the committee through the website www.louthhospital.com or by phone at 042-9356681 or contact your local councillor on how you can help to make the event the biggest and best yet in support of services at the hospital.”

Note:

Town Councillors who attended the meeting were, Martin Bellew, Jim Darcy, Jim Ryan, Harry Todd, Ian Dooley, Mark Dearey, Marianne Butler, Sean Bellew, Oliver Morgan,  Eamon O'Boyle.  There were apologies from Cllrs Conon Keelan and Kevin Meenan.

Local GP's warn hospital cutbacks will be detrimental to patient care. PDF Print E-mail

Taken from "Letters to the Editor" in The Argus - Wednesday October 14th 2009

Dear Sir,

WE write as a concerned group of GPs in the Dundalk and north Louth area. It is our opinion that the proposed changes to the services at our local hospital will be detrimental to patient safety and quality of care.

In particular, the proposal that the A&E department will eventually become a minor injuries unit is of particular concern. The removal of acute medical and surgical services is equally concerning.

We would be of the opinion this so called transformation exercise is purely in the interest of cutting costs which seems to be the only concern of HSE managers.

In the event of a medical or surgical emergency in the Dundalk or north Louth area, the transit time even with good paramedical backup is between 30 to 60 minutes. This would mean that the so called 'golden hour' is greatly diminished and therefore the patients chance of survival is also diminished.

Dundalk is a very large town by national standards and may achieve city status in the near future. It is also a Gateway under the National Development Plan. Therefore this, together with the concern of patient safety and care, makes it all the more imperative that there is a fully functioning A&E Department with acute medical and surgical backup.

We would further be of the view that services at the Lourdes Hospital are not sufficiently developed in order to facilitate the move of A&E services to that site.

It appears to us that the new A&E will not be fully staffed due to the embargo on health service recruitment and that bed capacity is not sufficient to backup the increased activity in the A&E.

Finally, we note there has been no meaningful liaison, consultation or debate between us and the HSE on this matter.

Yours truly,

Dr John McKeown, Dr Bart Cullen, Dr Declan Connolly, Dr Noeleen Managan, Dr Pascal Malone, Dr Sarah O 'Brien, Dr Patrick Byrne, Dr Paul McCarthy, Dr Paul O'Reilly, Dr Larry Curtin, Dr Fiona Henry, Dr Shane O'Neill, Dr John Whatley, Dr John Kennedy, Dr Prasad Nataragan, Dr Abba Baran.
