Louth Hospital - SAVE OUR HOSPITAL
Report on meeting with John Gormley on 14th Oct 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Members of the Save Our Hospital Committee met with Green Party Minister John Gormley yesterday in Leinster House.

The meeting was arranged following an invitation from the committee to John Gormley to attend the public meeting which was held on Thursday last 8th October 09.

Four members of the committee, Arthur Morgan TD, Anita McCann, Una McArdle and Cllr Tomas Sharkey were accompanied by Cllr Martin Bellew, chair of Dundalk Town Council.

Following the meeting committee spokesperson Anita McCann said:

"We had a very frank meeting with John Gormley when we put the question to him as to what he was willing to do to retain critical services, 24 hour A&E, acute medical wards and ICU at the Louth County Hospital. We also asked what was sought by him in the Programme for Government on the issue.

"We were all very disappointed by his response.  It is clear that in the Programme for Government agreed by the Green Party the health strategy is no different from the HSE Transformation Plan which will remove 24 hour A&E, male and female medical wards and the intensive care unit from the Louth County Hospital to Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda.

"John Gormley did undertake to look at the National Spatial Strategy in relation to the provision of health services in Dundalk and also to speak to Health Minister Mary Harney and the HSE and look at which services could be retained or replaced.  We will expect feedback from these within days as the clock is ticking for the Louth.

"We all left the room with a clear understanding that the Green Party had not lived up to promises given by them before the general election regarding the Louth County Hospital."

The following is a transcript of the written statement sent by Dermot Ahern and read out in his absence to Dundalk Town Hall on Thursday 8th October 2009.

"To whom it may concern due to the fact that I am involved in the ongoing talks between the Green Party and Fianna Fail concerning the review of the programme for Government, I am unable to attend tonight's meeting. I wish to confirm my absolute commitment to ensure the safest services possible are available to the people in the area of the Louth County Hospital. I am willing to work with others to this end as long as the Hospital is not used as a political football. Yesterday myself and Seamus Kirk met with Professor Drum of the HSE and his officials to emphasise that any change to services must not happen unless and until a better safer services is in place. They guaranteed that the Louth County Hospital will continue to play a very much increased role in the delivery of hospital services in the Louth working in tandem with the Lourdes Hospital. Unlike most other counties we have two hospitals in this county with a motorway in between. Our people should have the best services in the country. I will continue to do everything in my power to ensue that we have."

Statement ends.
