" Dear Sir,
We as GP's wish to register our dissapointment and disillusionment at the removal of A&E services and acute hospital care fromt Louth County Hospital. The HSE had unilaterally decided to reduce its services in the north Louth area.
We as general practicitioners and gate keepers of the health service were ignored in any decision making process. We attended two meetings with HSE rep Dr Colm Quigley (Wexford County Physician) and were informed of the intended transformation process. The decision to remove A&E services and Acute Hospital Care from the Louth County Hospital was a fait compli. Our opinion was not considered. We had no influence on the decision making process. The removal of the A&E service and Acute Medical Care will result in increased hardship to the people of North Louth.
As GP's we will continue to provide the same level of service as previously. We have informed the HSE that we will not fill the void created by the loss of A&E and Acute Hospital Services in the north Louth area. Sincerely,
Declan Connolly David Connolly

From the Argus Newspaper on 20th Jan 2010
OUR Lady of Lourdes Hospital has once again been rated the worst in the country. The Drogheda hospital is the only one in Ireland to receive an unsatisfactory rating in the latest HSE HealthStat report.
Our Lady of Lourdes, which was also graded as red in previous reports, scored particularly poorly for the management of its resources. As of October 2009, the hospital was 3 million over its allocation for its year-to-date budget, spending just over 92 million. Also, the hospital was over its staff ceiling, and had missed the 3.5% national target for total staff absenteeism.

THE NUMBER of patients who have tested positive for the superbug clostridium difficile (C Diff) at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth has risen to 14.
A further 17 patients with symptoms of the hospital-acquired infection have been identified, although none of these cases have been confirmed. All patients in the hospital with diarrhoea are now being screened for the infection.
Two patients who had acquired the superbug died in recent days and the hospital has imposed visiting restrictions among its efforts to contain the outbreak.
The public are asked to telephone the hospital if they want to make essential visits.
All elective surgery at the hospital has been cancelled until further notice, and three wards have also been closed to new admissions in a bid to contain the outbreak.
In order to relieve pressure on the hospital, GP and ambulance services have been requested to refer adult patients with medical complaints to Louth County Hospital Dundalk, Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan or the nearest appropriate hospital in north Dublin.
Adult patients with surgical complaints should be referred to Cavan General Hospital, Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan or the nearest appropriate hospital in north Dublin.
“Members of the public are asked to only attend the emergency departments at the hospital in the case of a genuine emergency and to contact their GP or out-of-hours service in the first instance,” a hospital official said.

Two patients who died in a Louth hospital during the week have had their deaths referred to the Coroner in an effort to determine if a contagious bacteria outbreak at the hospital was responsible.
Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda has had services curtailed and banned visitors in an attempt to curtail the Clostridium Difficile (C Diff) outbreak
In a statement released today the Health Service Executive (HSE) confirmed the deaths at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda were notified to the Coroner to determine if C Diff was responsible.
It said: “If a patient dies who may have been exposed to or who had contracted C Diff their death is notified to the Coroner who is responsible for determining if C Diff was the cause of and/or contributory factor to their death.”
Infection Control Procedures have been implemented at the hospital and members of the public are asked not to visit.
